2009-10 District Governor David Watt and Michele Sutherland

David joined the Rotary Club of Tawa in 1987 and was a member of that Club for 13 years before moving to live in Karori and joining the Rotary Club of Karori in 2000. He was President in 2004-05, Rotary’s Centennial Year. He was a member of the Rotary District NZ/Aust Student Exchange Committee for three years and District Coordinator of Science programmes for two years. He was Assistant District Governor in 2006-07 to DG Graham Douglass and in 2007-08 to DG Pat Waite.
Born and educated in Gisborne, David gained an arts degree at Victoria University and has had a career in public relations, industrial relations and historic heritage management.

He was a Press Secretary to Senior Cabinet Ministers in National and Labour Governments in Parliament during the 1970s and in public relations and industrial relations management at ICI New Zealand from 1980-89.
He had 12 years in elected local government 1983-95, being Tawa’s last Mayor from 1987-89 and two terms as Deputy Mayor of Wellington from 1989-95. He has been a hearings commissioner on resource consent hearings. David has been an advocate and an area coordinator for the New Zealand Historic Places Trust for 11 years, the last 8 for the central region covering all of Rotary District 9940, plus parts of District 9930 and 9970 (top of the South Island).
David and partner Michele have five adult children with their extended family. Four live in Wellington and one in Edinburgh. Michele has an arts degree from Victoria and a working background in interior design, having studied and gained her qualification at the Inchbald School of Design in London. She has been a residential real estate sales consultant for 9 years.

District 9940 is the largest of six Rotary districts in New Zealand, and has 59 clubs, and approximately 2,300 Rotarians.
As can be seen from the map at top right on this page, The district covers the lower part on the North Island as far as Waitara in the west, Taihape in the centre, and Dannevirke in the east.
Mt Taranaki/Egmont is one of the most significant landmarks in District 9940. It is situated in Taranaki near New Plymouth.
