The Hutt River Trail Print E-mail

The Hutt River flows through the Hutt Valley from its source in the southern Tararua Ranges. In the early days the river was an important transport link for both Maori and later, European settlers. A foot track along its banks extended over the Rimutaka Range to the Wairarapa.

The Trail Today

The Hutt River Trail re-establishes the lower section of the track (approx 32 kilometres) to provide routes for cyclists and walkers as well as access to the river for picnics, swimming, fishing and canoeing. The trail extends from the mouth of the Hutt River, keeping primarily to the eastern bank and will eventually run as far as the Te Marua water treatment plant in Kaitoke Regional Park. A secondary trail is being developed on the western bank to provide short loop walks between bridges.

How to get there

The Hutt River Trail starts at the eastern end of Marine Parade on the Petone Foreshore. You can, however, enter at many points along the trail from the Petone Forshore end to Upper Hutt, 24 km away.

Along most of the trail you will never be far from civilization making it ideal for people of all ages and abilities. Throughout the length of the track are seats rest areas and signs as shown below.
