Eastbourne Bays Green Bike Project Print E-mail

This Rotary Club of Pencarrow and Police 'Eastbourne Bays Green Bikes' initiative was launched under breathless blue skies in Eastbourne, on Saturday 6 June.  'Grey with showers' was predicted but the day turned out to be a stunner. Just goes to prove what some think - that both weather forecasters and politicians get paid far too much without the need to get anything right!

A good crowd was there to hear DG Tony congratulate those involved and also to speak about Rotary and projects like Polio Plus which has seen it so nearly eradicated due to Rotary involvement. Other invited community leaders including Hutt Divisional Commander Richard Chambers and HCC councillor Ross Jamieson expressed words of support and encouraged the community to take ownership of this initiative. They also congratulated Rotary for its contribution in making sure this idea got off the ground.

Pencarrow Rotary President Dr Gordon Hewitt thanked all those groups involved including HCC, Resene Paints, NZ Corrections, Lower Hutt Disabled Resource Centre and a big thanks to Bicycle Limited of 418 High St, Lower Hutt for their big effort and reduced rates for getting the project on the road. He especially thanked the local community who donated dozens of bikes towards the cause. Two families donated 4 each. President Gordon said he was "stunned" with the willingness of so many people to help with the project. "It's sparked a whole lot of cooperation which is great and something we can work with in the future".

Public response to the initiative has been quite outstanding. Organisers have received many compliments from locals and visitors to the area and the bikes have been whizzing around the streets since the launch. There are three purpose built Green Bike stands with signage at Days Bay Ferry terminal, Rimu Street Village, and at the south end of the promenade just north of Burdens Gate. Bikes are freely available from these stands - with helmets - for those 16 and over and familiar with NZ road rules to use and then leave at any of the stands.
