Foundation Scholar - Phillipa McKenzie Print E-mail

Sponsored by The Rotary Club of Wellington North

Phillipa McKenzie, Rotary, Foundation, District 9940 My name is Phillipa McKenzie and I am the recipient of the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship for 2009-2010.  With the assistance of the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, I will complete a Masters of Law: Advanced Studies in Public International Law (specialisation in Peace, Justice and Development) at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

This Masters course seeks to advance in-depth knowledge on the legal regulation of war and peace, the quest for justice (substantively and procedurally), aspects of humanitarian law as well as strengthening the rule of law in international economic relations and fostering the sustainable development of the world economy.
Specifically, in my thesis paper I wish to focus on the various forms of engagement, which aim to prevent conflicts through dialogue, peacekeeping, and disarmament.

This Masters course has a unique link to international courts and tribunals, and teaching materials which integrate contemporary developments in the field as the course is taught jointly at the Leiden Law School and at the The Hague Campus by the renowned Groitus Centre for International Legal Studies.  As a student of Leiden University, I will have the benefit of being taught by distinguished legal practitioners from international legal institutions and tribunals in The Hague and visiting professors.

By ascertaining this Masters of Law from Leiden University (one of the world’s leading international law universities) this will provide me with the knowledge and credibility required to actively advise on matters of public international law and advance humanitarian objectives in both domestic and international settings.

I am very grateful to District 9940 and more specifically the Rotary Club of Wellington North for all of the support I have been given throughout the Ambassadorial Scholarship process.
