ShelterBox was founded by UK Rotarian Tom Henderson OBE.and was launched in April 2000. ShelterBox NZ is administered by the Rotary Club of Mosgiel and is supported by New Zealand Rotarians. ShelterBoxes have been described by the Red Cross as the best form of primary aid in disaster situations they have seen in 25 years – that probably means ever. To date they have been delivered to 45 countries following all types of natural disasters, and also into war zones. More than 68,500 ShelterBoxes have assured shelter for over 500,000 displaced people. Each ShelterBox is numbered, and may be tracked at www.shelterbox.org.nz
|
The typical box includes a domed tent for 10 people, blankets or sleeping bags for 10-20 people, a multifuel stove, water carriers and water purification tablets for 6 months, eating plates/bowls and cooking utensils, treated mosquito nets, and a children's pack.
The cost of $1,500 includes total purchase, insurance, and delivery to anywhere in the world.
It is planned to have 120 ShelterBoxes held in New Zealand ready for dispatch to a disaster in the South Pacific. ShelterBox Response Team members are sent to a disaster to assess the size and magnitude of the disaster and to work with local Rotary Clubs in allocating boxes.
